đź’» What Is a Domain & Why Does It Matter

A domain is a unique name and address for your website on the internet. It's usually something easy to remember, like mycompanywebsite.com. People type this address into their browser to visit your site.

Why You Need a Domain
Without a domain, the only way to access a website is by using its IP address—a string of numbers like 192.0.2.1. Not very convenient at all.

Often, a domain uses your brand name. But it could also be your full name if it's a personal portfolio, or a keyword that helps people find your business—like buyflowersbrooklyn.com.

How To Get a Domain
Domains aren't bought forever—they're rented, usually on a yearly basis. You can get a domain from services called domain registrars, like GoDaddy, Domain.com, or Google Domains.

Start by checking if your desired domain name is available. For example, you might want cats-shop.com, but it's already taken. In that case, you can try a different top-level domain (TLD)—that's the ending of the address, like .com, .net, .org, and so on.

Watch Your Domain
If you don't renew your domain on time, your website will go offline. People won't be able to visit it, and someone else might snatch up your domain.

🔒 Renewing your domain is like paying rent—if you miss a payment, you could lose it.
