⚖️ What Is Visual Weight & How To Use It

Ever noticed how some elements on a page seem "heavier" than others, even when they're smaller? That's visual weight—it determines how heavy or light an object appears on screen. The greater the visual weight, the more it grabs your attention.

What Affects Visual Weight?
Size: Larger elements naturally appear heavier.
Contrast: Higher contrast increases visual weight.
Shape: Unusual or complex shapes attract more attention.
Texture and detail: More details = more visual weight.

How To Use Visual Weight On Your Website
— Highlight key content
The main call-to-action button should stand out. Make it visually heavier by increasing its size or using a bolder, more contrasting color.

— Balance the layout
Use visual weight to create harmonious compositions. For example, if one side of the screen feels heavy, balance it with text or empty space on the other.

— Create optical balance
Same-size elements can look different—like a square seeming larger right next to a circle. This can throw off the visual harmony. To balance this, make the circle slightly bigger.

To test your layout, blur the shapes or icons placed next to each other. If they still feel balanced and no single element dominates, you've got it right.
